Title: Autofire = cheating?
Post by: Loogaroo on November 26, 2008, 10:07:11 pm
What's the general sentiment about using autofire during the game? Legit or not?

OK. Yes. That point has been established.

What I'm looking for is why, in a game where almost all of the challenge comes from the platforming sequences, and even the boss battles put a much larger emphasis on hazard avoidance than offense, autofire would be considered cheating. You still have to outrun the charging spike wall thingy, you still have to jump over Wily's bowling balls, you still have to figure out the snake block pattern, navigate the two GnG spike tunnels, perfectly time the elevator room jumps, and so on.

(And if the next reply is "because it just is" or something similarly circular, then I'm just going to assume that it's legal and nobody wants to admit it.)

the reason is, this game is for people with patience, and people who can't shoot fast enough have to learn to shoot fast enough.

that takes patience.

Noted. Autofire is cheating, autofire is cheating, and for future reference, autofire is cheating. Got it.

I'd consider it no more cheating than the Wuss Points you get playing the game on Medium, but c'est la vie.

Manual fire will be used from this point forward.

wuss saves are  already part of the game....
in order to use autofire, you need another program (cheat engine)

I wouldn't know. I was using a program I already had that was completely unrelated to IWBTG, and really I was just using it to flip the jump and shoot buttons.

Wuss saves were put in the game to make Normal mode easier for new players; autofiring is using a third party program, which changes the code of the game temporarily, to change the experience of the game. Autofire = cheating. Cheat engine can give you infinite bullets on screen, autofire, infinite jumps, etc. if you know how to use it, but then you aren't beating the game, you're walking through the game doing nothing. If you wanted to do that, go make a game with a line for the ground, a few platforms, some walls, and infinite ammo for your gun. You'll get the same experience.

... And why were you using a third party program to change your jump/shoot? You can do that ingame.

Not for the joystick controls, to the best of my knowledge. They're hard-coded in, and for someone who's grown up playing NES and SNES games all his childhood, they're backwards.
