Title: I Wanna Be The Guy Barebones Construct Engine
Post by: Kayin on April 24, 2010, 06:21:40 pm
http://kayin.pyoko.org/iwbtgengine.cap

I'm sick of watching people use MMF2 or GM, so heres a god damned barebones engine from one of my projects. It's an early build that doesn't have all the features I'm working on for other projects, BUT hey it's pretty much 100% accurate.

Also theres no gun support, save system or death. Consider this a 'Litmus test'. I put only effort until putting together this little basic construct demo ( It's an old backup file from way back) and giving you something full featured would require me to actually gut a file and bugtest it, which I have no interest in. So if you can't figure out how to make this work for you, you probably shouldn't be making a fangame.

Hell, you probably shouldn't be making one anyways, but I'm not going to stop you.

Does this mean you're going to remake IWBTG in construct?
Also, OMG Kayin posted, and Wow, this looks epic, I'll check it out later.

So is this Construct or Construct 2?

Pfft, no, I'm working on new stuff.
So did you port your MFF2 iwbtg to construct, or just make an IWBTG engine from scratch again, using your epic god-like powers?

The engine is pretty basic so I just rewrote it. No big deal.

I like the GameMaker version...

Well, by all means then. But here is, pretty much, the exact code used in MMF2. It could even be used to make the GM version precisely accurate. Honestly I don't care what you guys do it with it since all the fan games are garbage, but I figure I can stop being greedy about some physics code thats balls-simple.

What? I don't think my game is garbage!

Trust me, it's garbage.

What part do you think is garbage? How do you suggest improve my game?

Wait no, Storyyeller has basicly made one of the only good fangames here. He didn't even use gamemaker or nothin'
But enough talk <have at you> this thread isn't about fan games so much but about the engine so; attempted re-rail!

This engine looks epic, and Kayin has finally released to source code, epic! Finally I should be able to get the jumps right. I've found it really hard to get the jumps the same as IWBTG so it should be great if all future fangames have good physics.
Oh and construct is Linux friendly so that should be good too.
Kayin, does this mean you're not going to wait for construct 2 to carry on game maker or that IWBTG will have a construct port or a sequel?

I dunno Storyyeller, I got to the second save point before going "this is unfunny and BS" and shrugged. Maybe the sadists like it, but I always thought of IWBTG to be more about being funny then hard. I think it's cool you've done everything your self and apparently people like it, but personally I gave up faster on it then other games.

Really the only IWBTG inspired game I like is Battle Kid. But who cares, you'll all free to do what you want. Don't go looking for validation through me, I have harsh standards.

edit: also, I am NEVER going to port IWBTG. That sounds like the most unfun thing ever.

Well I thought it was funny, but I guess I don't have quite the same sense of humor.
I also thought my game was easier then the others, but I suppose that's because I made it.

Back on topic:

When you released the engine, i immediately started messing around with construct/teaching myself. After "programming" blood, saves, bullets, a "camera", moving platforms, walljumps, and designing three screens, I thought, "Wait a minute. There's no sound."
After looking at all the sound events, I finally looked at the location of the sound files (jump1 and jump2). This is what I found:

: show
C:\Documents and Settings\Kayin\Desktop\game\jump1.wav
C:\Documents and Settings\Kayin\Desktop\game\jump2.wav

lolololololololol
but I would like the sounds; if it isn't too much trouble, can you release them/pm them to me?
it would help :D

Why does the doublejump code check for Grav<20? If I understand it correctly, this means that you can't airjump if you are falling too fast.

I'm not sure why it checks for Grav<20, as the variable can never get that high. 0.45 is added only if grav<0, and 0.5 is added only if grav<10.
So i dunno.

I copied most of the code from MMF2 and simplified it when I was sure what was going on. That was probably some legacy bug fix or an attempt to fix accidental double jumps or SOMETHING obscure. It's probably safe to remove.

Kayin, i noticied that u're mouvement engine is very similar to the "custom platform mouvement" of davidN you can find here : http://www.clickteam.com/website/usa/tutorials

were you inspired by this while making iwbtg ?

YES. People often ask me for the guide I used but I could never find it.

Kayin, are you aware of "I Wanna Be The Fangame"?It's actually a really good impersonation of IWBTG.
