General! / Why so many fangames? Why not more diversity of mechanics?

I am all for difficult platform games being made by amateurs.  However, I question the phenomenon of so many games using the basic template of IWBTG.  Especially because I find his basic movement and jumping kind of bland and not so fun (just as the Megaman character was never so fun to control).

Why not more games that have the difficult momentum/inertia effects of Super Mario Bros 1, or the high speed and jumping abilities of Meat Boy, or etc.?

Thanks all---I have Steam, but am feeling that I've tapped out their Mac platformer options though.

OK, can you give me your top reasons why I should buy a PC? (I.e., awesome hardcore platformers I will be able to play.)

For reference, my top games right now would probably be Super Meat Boy and 1001 Spikes.  These play on Mac and PC and are super fun.  1001 Spikes is unfair with traps a la IWBTG, but less grievously so.

The Jumper series by Matt Thorson is the first thing I'd be itching to play on PC.  Any more like this I should know?

That's right, Wine can have significant slowdown; and even a small slowdown is unacceptable when you're playing for bragging rights  :P

Also, plenty of games I just can't get to work at all on Wine, e.g. Jumper 2.

Hello friends,   I seek hard-ass 2D platformers along the lines of:

Super Meat Boy
VVVVVV
Jumper
Electronic Super Joy

on Mac OSX.  I am especially interested in finding quality freeware or fan-games that I might have missed in other discussions.

I seek Mac native games or quality ports.  I am playing Jumper via Wine and it is sadly slowed down. No good :(  (Maybe you can point to a copy that runs better?)

My favorite games are super-tough but fair---I'm less a fan of hidden traps and joke deaths a la IWBTG.  But I will accept those too :)     Many thanks!
