Tonight, I was about to get through hard mode with a new personal record, probably about 40 deaths. I was at the Labyrinth of the Guy, but I couldn't seem to get past the part at the end where you jump over the spike, fall left, and then avoid the fire. I had never had trouble with that part before but, for some reason, it took me about ten tries to do it. I ended up not getting a new record because of it.
There are other parts that have tripped me up in similar ways before. I recently couldn't kill the Megaman Dragon for some reason. I was going along killing him consistently, then one day, I just couldn't. Up until then, I had considered him one of the easier bosses. All the other bosses were their normal difficulties for me, except for the dragon. The next day, I was fine again.
Sometimes, I can't beat the Megaman instant death beam room. Other times, I can do it over and over without dying.
I'm sure I'm not the only one with these weird hiccups. What causes them, to the best of my knowledge, is frustration at the first death. Dying on an obstacle is no special occasion. Dying somewhere unexpected I think leads to carelessness the next time. Maybe some sort of subconscious need to prove that the death was a fluke and that the part where one died is "easy" leads to an abandonment of caution. Finding out why these problems happen would probably improve my performance somewhat.
Thoughts? Have any of you experienced this? What did you make of it?
