Hey all,

It's been a couple years, and as is tradition, I have returned to promote my latest game to the handful of people that still frequent these parts.

Zenith Hunter

The most difficult climb is often the most rewarding. This is certainly the case for the Zenith, a mysterious region situated high atop an arduous mountain path. It is said that untold riches await those who are able to overcome the rigors of the ascent. Many hunters have tried to reach this fabled summit, but very few have succeeded. As an aspiring hunter, do you have what it takes to make it to the top and discover the true nature of the Zenith?

You can download the game from my itch.io page at https://fyndr.itch.io/zenith-hunter

I'll be monitoring this thread over the next week or so to answer any questions you might have about Zenith Hunter or anything else that comes to mind. I recommend giving the game a try - although not as difficult as The Last Pikeman, it's still decently challenging for the discerning player.

Yeah I know but it gives me the warm fuzzies to think that I get to post on this forum again after such a long time  :P

But yeah I'm mostly promoting on other platforms that have more reach. I posted here mainly in case there were any The Last Pikeman fans left that were interested in other games by the same dev (myself).

Hey all,

It's been a very long time since I've last been to these forums (looks like August 2011 was my most recent visit) but to remind everyone who I am, I'm the guy that made threads so many years back about The Last Pikeman (thread here: https://iwbtg.kayin.moe/forums/index.php?topic=849.0 or direct download of version 1.0 here: http://www.michaelseaholm.com/data/pikeman/the_last_pikeman_v.1.0_complete.zip ).

Well since then I've worked on a bunch of other game projects. Most of them sucked, but some of them were okay, and difficult enough to be interesting. I've since posted them elsewhere on the Internet, but then I remembered that this forum was all about hard-ass games and figured what the hey, might as well keep you all up to speed on these things as well. So here are a couple of new(ish) games that I've come up with since finishing TLP.

Oneiro is a first-person action-adventure game complete with 3D graphics (!) and takes place in an unusual, often off-putting dream world from which you must escape. It involves a moderate amount of exploration, problem-solving, and finesse to get through the various levels of the dreamscape. Graphically speaking the game is a solid 2/10, but it's entertaining and surreal enough that I think it was a decent attempt at a 3D game to start with.

Terrier has a very simple aesthetic (based on old Macintosh computers) but is a decently challenging puzzle exploration game. You control a dog trying to find its master and must journey across seven continents helping people as you go. It's difficult in the sense that you need both problem-solving skills to get through the puzzle elements and quick reflexes in some parts. Both monochrome and color versions are available.

Anyway I'll be checking this thread over the next week or so to answer any questions you might have (about these games, The Last Pikeman, what's gone on over the past several years, etc.) If you can give these games a shot then it would be much appreciated.

Thank you.

Well, it has been a while, hasn't it?

I recently went through my collection of self-made games and noticed, chief among them, The Last Pikeman. I tried playing through the latest version that I had uploaded to the Game Maker site (v.0.8b) and found myself somewhat impressed by how good the game was despite knowing how bad the game was.

I did notice, however, that when I created this version I accidentally, through omission or by pure random mistake, made one section of the game totally impassible due to the lack of one square-wide platform.

The knowledge of this incompleteness stewed within me for a while. As it stands nobody can beat v.0.8b unless they take advantage of the save compatibility feature and get past that screen in the earlier v.0.7b. Or, better yet, I could release a version - a final 1.0 - that would fix this otherwise trivial error.

Finally, after months and months of putting it off, I opted to do the latter.

The Last Pikeman version 1,0 is available at http://sandbox.yoyogames.com/games/184980/download which has also been set up on the first post accordingly. For some reason YoYo Games no longer allows periods in the titles of their games, so now it is version 1,0 rather than 1.0 - not that this matters terribly much.

Of particular note regarding this release is that the source code has been included along with the executable. It is extremely kludgey, and in retrospect could have been designed a lot more simply, but it is what it is. Consider it my legacy, and my official bowing-out from my involvement with The Last Pikeman.

If there is anything wrong with this version, I leave it to the user to take it into their own hands to come up with a fix, to be distributed as they see fit - if at all. At least now I can rest easy knowing that it is officially over: there exists a viable version of The Last Pikeman that is not impossible to beat.

Looking back one last time, I feel I must thank you, the community of this forum, for your collective support. You made making this game not only possible, but enjoyable.

Thank you.

Hello, fellow forum members! Unfortunately, I only ever come to IWBTF to check on and update the Guy count due to busyness in my personal and professional life. So, to make things a little more convenient for me (and, admittedly, a pain for everyone else) I've decided to stop keeping track of the count, effectively terminating my visits to this forum altogether.

Attached is a list of all the Guys to date, all in lower case because of a simple Guy adding/checking program that I wrote. If your username is not on the list and you have posted here previously, be sure to post here again. I'm pretty sure I have everyone written down that has explicitly stated that he or she had become The Guy, but there is always the chance that someone managed to slip through the cracks.

I figure that any moderator who wants to can feel free to update the count on whatever basis he or she feels is adequate. And, at any rate, I'll probably be back now and again to see what's new around the forums, but do not expect me to update the count from this point forth.

All right, I realize this may be necroposting, but I have information relevant to this thread:

After doing nothing with the game for a few months, I decided to debut it at the TigSource forums. A general consensus decided that the game was too hard, due mostly to fake difficulty (i.e. invisible blocks, random spikes from nowhere, etc.). So, in an attempt to increase the size of my target audience, I decided to make a second version of the game that decreases the amount of fake difficulty and increases the significance of the plot, in that order. I would like to note that although I am reducing the difficulty on this new version, the old version will be available, now and forever, with the caveat that all non-insane players should start with the easy version and then, if they're feeling particularly suicidal, try their hand at Super Hard Mode.

You can track the progress on this new version at http://forums.tigsource.com/index.php?topic=4753.0, where I'll try to keep developments fairly constant.

Thank you for your support and feedback.

I might work a bit on the game during the upcoming winter break, so it's a possibility. But maybe not, so don't quote me on this one.

No, all you have at your disposal is your ability to jump to a fixed height and your trusty pike.

(Maniacal laughter)

A furry is ... a person who is sexually aroused by anthropomorphic animals.

I was feeling all well and good until I read this.

But, then again, I posted a link here earlier to some of Dr. Comet's work, so... damn.

Hey guys, what's going on over here?

I'm assuming you're referring to
the part after you get past the group of flying enemies and after the falling ceiling?

If that's the case, then
I suggest you try to trigger the spike while keeping away from it.

This can be done by
jumping straight up from the closest standing position you can get to, then going right a bit as you fall, and then immediately going left as soon as you are parallel with the spike.
If done correctly,
the spike should pass harmlessly above your head.

Does that help, or are you talking about something else?

Not to my knowledge.
