I think people shouldn't expect a fangame to be done in a week i think they need to accept that to make a decent fangame a year might even be too early.

I've heard this comment before...

but I agree with it, i'm estimating my game will take two years to be completed

I agree with the above statements when the project is done as a solo work but couldn't that time be reduced if you have multiple people in your game making team?

Thanks for the answer and to be honest I waited for that kind of response. A while ago I read some thread where someone presented an idea for a fan game but was met by lack of respect because of missing programming skills. I tried would it be possible to get people behind such a project by having clearer vision of what I want to achieve and clear plans for achieving it.

But I'll learn programming and come back to talk about IWTBTD when I have something physical to show. I have some seven years old C++ book collecting dust somewhere and I guess the basics of that language haven't changed that much so it's prpobably a good way to start. I'd appriciate if you'd provide links for those online references and tutorials you used when learning programming (Sloperama provided some links but they're quite scattered). I'd also like to ask how long did it took from you to finish Pickory's first playable version?

Sounds like a great idea, simple yet engaging concept that requires lots of cunningness and strategic thinking and I can't immediately think any other multi player game that's premise leans on paranoia. I suggest however that don't kill those who excecute a wrong person, instead give them some hinderances like stats getting lower, blurry screen or anything else that makes surviving harder for them.

Hi to all. I have an idea for a I Wanna Be the Guy fan game but it however takes a different approach to its source material. Because my lack of programming skills (more about that later) I don't have any playable material but I do have concept art.

So ladies and gentlemen of IWBTG community, I'd like to present you...

I Want to Be the Darkness

There are three things where I Want to Be the Darkness would differ from many other fan games.

Story

This game would have a red line that keeps the ten levels together and provide dramatic momemnts, twists and turns. Kefka Palazzo, a nihilstic clown-masked wizard, causes chaos and destruction on the lands with the assistance of his apprentice, wind mage Vaati. He doesn't excactly want to become the Guy, rather he seeks the knowledge The Guy is supposed to have but The Guy, formerly known as the Kid, has know idea what he's talking about. As he has to abandon his fortress The Guy finds various of people, most prominent onces being a young mage Terra Branford and a gentleman thief only known as Trilby, who are on their mission to stop Kefka obtaining omipotency and joins in their quest.

However Kefka isn't the only dangerous one to The Guy as the mysterious doctor hiding in shadows has his own plans of world domination and seems to know a fair deal of why Kefka suddenly turned against his former employer, Gesthalian Empire. Not mention the doctor's right hand creature happens to be Ridley, a blood thirsty space dragon who has his own vendetta against our kid hero.

During the course of the game The Guy and his allies have to face hardships and horrors in their fight against evil and misguidance and find will to fight against impossible odds. The Guy has to also question his own position in this world: Why so many people have tried to become the Guy? Is it even worth of all the trouble?

Dark Atmosphere

As you might have guessed from the description of the story (and the title of the game) IWTBTD is sort of a dark fic of IWBTG universe as its focus would be on drama and horror. Majority of the levels and traps are ment to make uneasy feelings, whenever it's fear or just plain tension. Or then just amuse in case a player is not frightened easily.

Oh, there would be humor as well. It is important to provide the players some changes to breathe.

Team Work

As mentioned before The Guy doesn't have to face the bastions of insanity alone as there are allies to help him. Some parts and many boss fight would require the team work of one or more characters. Players wouldn't be able to control the allies but I haven't yet desided could they work on their own as scripted or could the players give some simple commands.

So that was the premise of I Want to Be the Darkness. My own programming skills are nonexistent and therefore I'm looking for people who are interested to turn this idea into a reality. The work progress I suggest is under the spoiler tags to prevent this post form becoming too space taking.

The Work Progress of IWTBTD

1. I, the project manager, send material for level desingers who are responsible for one or more levels per person, depending on how many are interested to join the project. The material includes story script, music pieces and concept art for the level. The desings for the boss' attack patterns and certain traps are given by me but otherwise the level desingers are given free hands. I'll also provide links to other source materials in case a desinger is unfamiliar with a level's theme and the game it's based on.

2. I and the level desingers contact each other, preferrably by using Skype, where they tell their opinions about the materials I sent and can also ask for more material or more spesific instructions.

3. After finishing the levels the desingers send them to play testers, one of them being myself. The play testers check for difficulty and bugs and they will be adjusted if necessary.

4. When the levels have gone through all testing and bug fixes they are sent to someone who puts the levels together thus making the game complete.

Let me know if there are more steps needed.


I'm also thinking about adding voice acting because I love acting and directing other actors so I'm also asking how many are interested from that. There are 21 voiced characters (7 females, 14 males, one male voiced by myself) so everyone interested can provide some voice samples or tell about other projects where their voices could be heard.

So... what do you think?

Greetings to the IWBTG community. I'm ActorOfVeil, long time lurker, first time poster.

I first found I Wanna Be the Guy through TV Tropes web page in mid 2010. Even though I haven't have much time to try to become a Guy I just love its concept of mixing various video game characters and worlds together. I know all the events as I've watched a perfect walk through and Kayin's own play through but as Kayin said in the mentioned play through I Wanna Be the Guy is best enjoyed by watching someone else suffer and eventually triumph. And that's pretty much how I've exprienced majority of the fan games as well (for example dcx666's reaction on finally beating I Wanna Be the GB is a classic). But I plan to exprience at least one upcoming good fan game completely unspoiled. And become a Guy.

In real life I'm trying to become a professional actor/director/writer (preferrably a combanation of the mentioned professions). And... I guess that's for now. Glad to be on board.  :)
