Announcements! / Forum Closed
« on: January 01, 2019, 07:28:03 am »
To kick off the New Year, the forums are closing. For now registration has been disabled and most members will find themselves unable to post (though some in special groups can still post, though I recommend not).

I care a lot about archivism so while I want to not be maintaining a forum no one uses just to patch security holes, I will be leaving the software up while I prepare a static backup.  If you have any precious moments in your PMs or non-public boards, -back them up now-. You'll likely have a number of months to do this but rather safe than sorry.

edit: I got a static page up over here. http://kayin.pyoko.org/iwbtg/static/forums/ Feel free to check it out and make sure everything works fine. If something isn't working right, message me on twitter or shoot me an email. Plan right now is to take the forums down completely at the end of the month.

General! / Sun setting the boards?
« on: December 07, 2018, 02:27:08 am »
I'm considering shutting down the forums here. The forums have been nothing but a glorified hangout for a few of you for awhile. Now as time goes on they get more and more neglected and potentially more and more of a security vulnerability. Most activity seems to be replaced by the IWBTG discord.

So how about it? Who actually cares? I don't plan on making a decision any time soon but and I'd look into ways to archive the forum safely if I did shut it down. Something to think about.

Announcements! / Enabling SSL
« on: May 12, 2016, 04:31:25 am »
So I've migrated everything to using SSL. Mostly this benefits the forums, but it really shouldn't matter. If anyone has any problems because of this change, let me know. Right now SSL is forced, but if people have issues I might revert it.

Announcements! / Domain Change
« on: August 22, 2014, 03:57:19 am »
So I switched to my own domain at this point ( .moe? Awesome) so there might be some weirdness in the coming days. I'm going to try and configure apache to take care of as many of them as possible, but report any major issues here.

Also note, the owner of the pyoko domain has told me that if I've moved on, he's going to let it expire. I'm not sure how much time is left on it, but be sure to update your bookmarks and all that.

Announcements! / More up to date Source-code
« on: July 22, 2013, 07:33:39 pm »
I've been told by a bunch of people that the IWBTG source is not up to date. So I was going through an old harddrive today and I might have come across the modern files.

I'm not sure which is which (since I can't open them) but ONE of these should be the most recent version.

Announcements! / No More Forum Ads
« on: April 05, 2013, 05:03:19 pm »
Google is hassling me because ya'll a bunch of greasy perverts (I'm so proud) and honestly the forums generate me like 2 dollars a month (which is like, nothing compared to the main site ads) and honestly they're ugly and I kinda hate ads anyways even though I need them. But heck, why punish my most adoring fans for 2 dollars?

If any of you feel at all guilty (you shouldn't) you can toss me a buck or two on the donation tab and I'll totally buy like, a soda or a burger or something with it or something.

I can't wait till I release Brave Earth and you guys buy something from me and I'm not tricking people to click ads or something.

Announcements! / Drive Failure and Incoming Downtime
« on: November 12, 2012, 10:07:55 pm »
So some nutso drive problems are going on with the pyoko server so there IS going to be some downtime. I'm currently backing stuff up, so if things fail, they will be backed up from this point. So any comments made from this point on have no certainty of appearing after all this is dealt with. Hopefully I won't lose anything meaningful during all this. Either way: Expect downtime. Possibly a lot.

edit: Alright we're alive again. Should be fine. There might be downtime somewhere down the road when the secondary bad disk gets replaced, but that'll happen whenever it happens and hopefully should make for shorter downtime.

Announcements! / Gaiden Patch 1.2 Beta
« on: July 26, 2012, 04:22:21 am »
This will be the last one for awhile, unless I feel the need to clean up a few things.

What's New/Fixed:
*Hitsparks added to failed grapples, telling you why it failed.
*Grapple a little bit more lenient in certain situations.
*Grapple may occasionally still reject improperly in some edgecases, but shouldn't be an issue.
*Down terminates grapples without a jump. Useful occasionally, like that one part of 1-2.
*Drone segment in 1-1 made slightly easier. Always at least a 3 pixel shot that can hit the drone thrower.
*Map screen sending you to wrong level should be fixed.
*F2 ends a level and resets your time/deaths for speedrunning. Was in previous version but unannounced.
*F1 can bring you to or exit the key config screen on the save select screen. Good if you fuck up your keys.
*DEL on the save select screen deletes saves.
*Shoot+Jump+Claw also skips the end of act cutscene.
*Barrels can be used to kill enemies. Not particularly useful, but can work.
*Tons of little network things added for an improved online experience. Should be able to have weirder and more interesting events.
*Particles on the Charge Shot always go to the Kid
*You can "megaman jump" through Bald Bull's boss door.
*But you can't get Bald Bull out of bounds anymore by jumping back through the door

What's not fixed
*Bald Bull/Mr Sandman Glitches (Should eventually be fixed)
*Going behind Sagat(I think I'll leave this)
*Some grapple situations. Though if it rejects, it's because it was a bad shot that just barely grazed a valid surface.
*Probably tons of little things that aren't terribly important
*Some controllers still don't work. I think the input system totally rejects analog controls. In such situations, use Joy2Key.
*Some crashes. Depending on how common they are, I might make work arounds but none of them should make you lose progress.

Just press download game to download the new version. This again will be the last version in awhile, so I encourage you all to upgrade one more time.

If the game is crashing on the title screen PLEASE RESTART and then report if that helps.

if the game is crashing while restarting, lower your graphical details. It'll reduce the blood splatter.

If you can't save, try and put your EXE in a different directory or run as Adminstrator to make sure it has write permissions.

Yes, Ironman is bugged. All gamejolters will have the challenge removed during the next release, though if you achieve it now, you should re-achieve it automatically.

Thanks for all the Excellent® feedback. Expect a patch to handle a bunch of this stuff in the coming days.

Here we go! I Wnna Be the Guy: Gaiden is ready for public consumption. Things might be a bit buggy at first, but a few revisions later and things should be all smoothed out. I'm sure you'll all live though. The bugginess is sometimes part of the charm for the IWBTG experience, right?

So what is Gaiden? Gaiden is an episodic side story following The Lad in his search for The Kid/Guy. Why does The Lad seek The Kid? Who cares -- it's a 3 stage episodic bite of new IWBTG action.  What about the future of Gaiden? Hard to say. Brave Earth is going to steal my attention until it's done, so don't expect more any time soon, but I surely will add more content at some point. How big will that content be? How many episodes will their be? Who cares, I'm playing it by ear.

So what's working, what's not working and whatever?

We have...

*New stage based gameplay
*3 Stages
*Configurable Controls with Gamepad support
*Trophies (also supported through Gamejolt)
*Time Trial Leaderboards(Only through Gamejolt)
*A new button! Z to jump, X to shoot and X to BIIIONIC AAAARM
*Probably won't crash!

What isn't done?

*No fullscreen or resolution support.
*Probably needs a lot of optimization
*Probably has lots of bugs
*People wanna be able to fuck with people like I fucked with Floe. I might be able to come up with a way to do that in the future.
*Graphical options are basic. Sound options seem to be a little flighty.
*Some interface/menu stuff is kinda groudy and needs modification.
*Might still crash! (but unlike with MMF2, there is more I can do about it this time around.)

So if you have any problems, bare with me.

Also I'd recommend getting a Gamejolt account so you can share your trophies and times with other players! Sign-in is inside the trophy menu.

To be released within a week of EVO. So get ready for a set of 3 levels and a future of IWBTG episodic content.

I, the creator of I Wanna Be The Guy, give full permission for people to upload and monetize videos of them playing on any service. You can also include IWBTG material in any books, publication or whatever.

I also give full permission (Because I still get this question for some reason) to make fangames. I request any fangame to have an appropriately fangamey name (so no IWBTG2 like that slapdick on Yoyo Games).

I've recently revised my merchandise policies. The general rule is still true: Don't sell merchandise without asking. I might ask for a cut, I might not (I probably won't. I haven't yet). That said, most for-profit fan work is small scale things -- stuff on etsy, prints and stuff at conventions, whatever. While those things are technically illegal, I don't expect more concern from anyone than Naruto. So while I would still prefer to be informed (and to see your work for my own enjoyment), if your work is event based or limited run and you make it clear you're selling fanwork, I probably don't care.

So as a guideline, while I would prefer to always be notified, unless you expect to make more than a thousand dollars off something, I don't care. Not that this policy has any real legal enforceability, but I won't be mad and think you're a jerk or anything and won't yell at you if I find out.

I don't want to hinder fanwork, I just want to protect my self from people who might say, print a whole bunch of shirts on a big website and go "WELL YOU SAID EVERYTHING IS COOL SO WE DIDN'T BOTHER TELLING YOU". If you're reading this, wondering if you should sell something, you're probably not that kind of person and I'll probably be honored.

That should include MOST situations I've been asked about. So now I can put this up and you can still email me anyways. :P

Announcements! / Fix My Game: IWBTG Source Code Release
« on: November 09, 2011, 06:54:49 pm »
I am releasing I Wanna Be the Guy's source code right now. I'm not going to make up a fancy license or anything, I'm just going to tell you what is and is not acceptable.

  • You may release variants/rom hacks THAT ARE PROPERLY LABELED.
  • You may yank out engines and code and use them freely.
  • You may take credit for any work you do, just exercise good taste. Do not do a few changes to IWBTG and act like it's your own work. If you use and borrow code, just credit me for that -- the rest of the work is clearly yours though.
  • You, as a COMMUNITY, may (and should) try and band together to fix up the main game for a new, bugfixed release.

Some other notes. I have NO IDEA about ANYTHING in the code anymore. It is out of my mind. Don't even bother asking me what something is. I can't even open these files anymore, I no longer use MMF2.

Secondly, some stuff is just NOT going to work in new versions of MMF2. I think the elevator platforms left of spawn are broken and I'm sure plenty  of other things are too. Stuff like that is going to need to be found and fixed and I can't help you. Also keep in mind that I LEARNED MMF2 ON IWBTG. Code is going to be AWFUL and unreadable and almost never commented. If you see a better way to do things, do it.

Thirdly, for said community project, if it so happens, let me set some ground rules.

First, no new content. Maybe negotiable later. Second, selective bug fixes. Of the 'beneficial' bugs I'd like to see fixed, the only one I can think of is using 'Retry' to teleport to the Kid's starting point of a layout. Stuff like riding a Zoomer out of bounds is too cool not to keep. Also tracking down the god damned "can't shoot max number of shots" should be fixed and any left over developer keys outside of the E-N-D and bossrush ones at the title screen should be removed.

Anyways I hope people find this fun and exciting and eventually we can have someone port IWBTG to OSX or something. That'd be super nice for a lot of people. Anyways, here it is. This might not be the NEWEST version, but if it isn't, I'll try and find it later. I got some portable harddrives it might be on.

And just remember, use common sense with what you do with my game. As I have borrowed from others, you may borrow for me.

Announcements! / Super Talking Time Bros
« on: May 26, 2011, 11:15:56 pm »

uper Talking Time Bros is a joint effort that took place on Jeremy Parish's personal forums, Talking Time. This project took a handful of typical gamers and showed how they could outperform the vast majority of the indie game scene in terms of level design simply through a simple peer review process. I can say without hesistation that I enjoyed playing this project far more than either of the New Super Mario Bros games. The project was made in the now abandoned SMBX engine, with the whole community being allowed and encouraged to submit level files. A lot of levels had to be revised quite a bit and I believe a few levels were salvaged by other members of the community. The pack is not perfect -- it's slightly disconnected at times in style for obvious reasons, but it avoids virtually all he pitfalls of 'rom-hack' style level design. These levels were designed with the premise of SMB3 in mind -- fun, short, simple levels. The pack goes crazier than that for sure, but that goal kept things from getting out of hand.

I submitted two levels of my own (being impressed by the quality of the initial pack) to the expansion pack. The expansion pack is a little bit more wacky and akin to those hidden Starworld levels in Super Mario World. One of my submissions is a neat, but straight forward level and another is hidden... perhaps due to it's IWBTGish nature? Anyways, I'm hosting the whole shabang right now so please, download it and give it a go. It comes with SMBX so it should be all ready to play. I think many people will be impressed with the powers of peer review and revision.
