For those of you having problems uploading avatars for the forum, I've been doing a little bit of research and according to the smf dev I briefly talked to, the easiest workaround is simply to download your chosen image, upload it to an image hosting site (e.g. imgur, imageshack, puush, etc.), and have smf take the image from the hosting site.
The explanation of why exactly this has to be done is, according to the dev, "really stupid", but basically it has to do with a bug in how smf reads in image files that still isn't fixed, even in 1.1.19.
