General Discussion! / To The Non-Bronies
« on: December 25, 2011, 06:33:04 am »
After hearing a good review from two members here, I wanted to share this with you. Really it's for everyone, but I hope that non-bronies take away what I feel from it. I think it's my best chance at explaining exactly what this show did for me and what it means to me. Although not all bronies went through this, I hope that after reading you can understand why some of us are obnoxious about the show. It truly means a lot to some of us and we think it could mean a lot to you too.

Of course, none of you have to read it if you don't want to. I want to share it anyway. Perhaps a bit narcissistic, but I imagine you'll be able to forgive me.

Thanks for living and let live so far, for the most part. Thanks for your love and tolerance.

Have a Merry Christmas, all of you. Never forget that I love you guys.

General Discussion! / Hey Everyone

I wanted to thank you all for everything you've done for me. Thanks for being my friends and thanks for being there in these past years.

I get to leave to go to college tomorrow.

What I just realized that means is that I also get to leave everything. I finally get a future. I finally get a time where I no longer want to die every day. Where I can be simply happy.

I made it.

And I certainly didn't make it alone. I made it primarily thanks to my friends, mainly my online ones.

You are some of my closest online friends, and you've been here for me the entirety of the time I've been here. Since I joined this forum I was at home here, and I made it this far in my life thanks, in part, to everything here. Whether it be a day of jokes to lighten my mood or a serious discussion to distract my mind, you were always here.

And yes, this probably seems absurdly and even obscenely sentimental (I'm a brony, what the hell did you expect?), but you guys have no idea how much you've done for me. And this is the best I can give in return.

So thank you all. Thank you for being you.

It has come to my attention that Kayin, instead of being the almighty laissez-faire ruler of Equestria IWBTF, ACTUALLY DOES THINGS.

Like tells the admin's what to do:

All our admins leave ;-;

Crap! / What causes love?
« on: November 27, 2010, 08:01:17 pm »
I was wondering if we may be able to debate to a consensus on what actually causes love: Both "Love at first sight" as well as love that is found over time between two people. This question has been running through my mind recently.

Normally I open my threads with a paragraph on what I think, but I am truly baffled. I'm wondering if any of you out there have ideas. I'll leave that part up to you guys and the refuting up to me c:

Unlike the first forum I posted this to, I consider you guys much closer friends. So I'm not afraid to ask for help. I need help here. I need to not love her anymore. It's destroying me. I have to leave for now, but I'll be back soon to contribute as much as I can to the discussion.

Serious Discussion! / High School
« on: November 04, 2010, 09:13:12 pm »
It may seem like an odd topic for discussion, but in reality what is accomplished in high school. Let's look at the thing it says it wants to accomplish first

TEACHING OF KNOWLEDGE: High school is often thought as a place of learning. However, although cliche, an oft expressed thought is "when are we ever going to use this?" Although these people may seem ignorant in others eyes, the question brings up a good point: when are we going to be able to use what is taught? In reality, we should be able to use much of what we are taught since we are taught so much. It should be able to apply to many situations. However, also in reality, the knowledge we gain is non-applicable to almost any situation. Why is this?  I believe that it is because although we cover a wide range of topics, we never delve into the deep enough. We learn a superficial amount in each subject and learn very little in any one specific one. High school produces people who are jack of all trades but master of none. In fact, even the title jack of all trades is misleading because of how school is structured. Unfortunately, many schools tend to ignore the fact that some students who do well just learn the information needed for the soonest test then preoccupy themselves with learning the new material while forgetting the old. It seems that school overall fails as a true education system: a failed version of a university, if you will. So what else does school accomplish?

DISTRACTION: The entire school system up until college, but specifically at the younger level seems to be meant for a place where children or adolescents/young adults can go to be distracted all day whilst the adults who take care of you are able to do their actual jobs. This is a great system, in actuality, but many people would disagree with the idea that school is just, in essence, a dumping ground for children. Thus, schools put up the facade of education so that more people agree. However, this system seems to be outdated, at least at the level of high school. More and more young adults are looking for jobs as early as freshmen. Children are able to take care of themselves at a much earlier age than some adults realize, although they may not be able to fully support themselves in the world. This idea of distraction still works at a middle and elementary school level, but once in high school it seems almost pedantic. So maybe in high school it moves up a step from distraction.

PREPARATION FOR SOCIETY: It's a very good idea to prep young adults for how society works. However, high school fails at creating a functional simulation in this aspect as well. What high school does is stick you into a mini society comprised of a large variety of people. So far so good. Where it fails is at the emotional level, which is required in society as you get to know people. After 12 years of "working" with these people, people you now call friends and close friends, some people you call boyfriend/girlfriend or lover, you are ripped apart from them. This is not how society actually works. Generally when you are ripped apart from the people you care about in society it is because of some unforeseen hardship, at which point the people you care about can still be there for you and give you support. Instead, you are expected to be in an auspicious situation and continue to work even though all those emotional ties are lost. This can actually be detrimental for forming alliances, friendships, and co-workers in future situations. It also fails to let you make your own decisions fully. Because of the educational facade mentioned earlier, one is unable to fully choose what one wants to learn. Instead, you MUST learn a superficial amount of knowledge in many areas so that you may graduate and "succeed" in high school.

I cannot think of other functions that school serves, personally. I would not be surprised if I missed some. Based on this alone, however, I propose a change. There must be a better system that could be implemented to help us.

tl;dr: School fails at doing what it says it's doing as well as the other things it should be doing.

I would love to hear your thoughts on this.
