Help! / Bosses order

I was wondering if there was any particular order in which you have to beat the bosses in to complete this game?
I beat Mike Tyson first off, then Birdo, then Dracula, then Kraidgief, then Metroid/Mother (or whatever) and I have followed the level after that boss, but it takes me to that part outside The Guys castle and teleports me back to the beginning of the game. But there's also another way which is quite difficult, but I don't know which way to go. If I have to do that Bowser boss, do I have to go through everything again to beat it?
