Well since i'm here. How about a clone gimmick of some sort. You'd pick up a item that would create a clone next to you that does everything you do, bumping into walls to seperate him from you and have him push buttons at the same time as you. (or other things idk)

I think I Wanna Make It Breaking Out did something similar, though it is a nice idea.

More Transformations or effects. Wario Land immediately comes to mind (the barrels are basically Bouncy Wario already).

Platform that changes direction every time you land on it (maybe go up and down as well) / goes in the direction the player is looking at.

Platform which goes faster the closer you stand to the edge.

Placeable blocks.

Horizontal dash.

Low gravity / Controlled (temporary) floating or slow falling.

Automatic walk + direction change if collision (combinable with ice area?)

Hey guys, it's me. The creator guy. I just wanted to let you all know I will be starting this project back up after I have planned everything, which is what I've been doing the past weeks... or months.

I'm here to ask you all what kind of design gimmick or mechanic you think is interesting, or would be interesting to see in this game. I have been taking this whole thing seriously, and I plan on making it a very long game (without losing it's touch of course). I figured I would ask you all for ideas to speed up this whole planning process, because the project is long overdue.

Feel free to suggest anything for the game, I am open to anything. If I like your suggestion and I use it for the game with your permission, needless to say I will properly credit you.

Wow! Finally! Kill The Guy got the future! ^^
If you ask about ideas... Hm.. It would be awesome if saves worked individually for each world.

How about a gimmick where you go back and forth between the past and the present, and things you do in the past alter/change stuff in the present? Could make for some interesting puzzles, though I'm not sure if it would work with this kind of game (since lots of stuff resets on death. If it's too much of a hassle then don't worry about it)

I think another cool idea would be a more exploration-based Metroid style world, and you have to collect various power ups and things to be able to progress through the different areas. If you're only taking one idea per person, then I'd choose the Metroid gimmick/theme above my previous suggestion. And if you're feeling cruel you can throw in an escape sequence after the boss too, with no save...lol okay that's not a serious suggestion XD Though an after-boss escape would be cool, I enjoy escape sequences, usually pretty exciting.

...I'm obviously starved for more Metroid (aren't we all?)
