Make the game harder once you've beaten it
« on: December 13, 2007, 02:14:18 pm »

After beating The Guy, everything else just seems trivial.  Sure, the graveyard on Very Hard is pretty tough, but even the fortress of The Guy is easy as hell.  I mean, I'm pretty sure it's quite easy to spend more time beating The Guy than beating the rest of the game.

The pussy solution would just be to make The Guy easier.  But this is I wanna be the guy.  You need to make the rest of the game worthy of The Guy.

You've mentioned bonus content before, actually - I assume you'll only be able to play it if you've become The Guy?  My suggestion for the far future is to make a harder version of the entire game that you can only play after becoming The Guy.  It could be The Guy Mode or something.

I don't really know how you'd go about making the game harder, but you're the designer. >_>

He could put a time limit from save to save.

That'd be less mean and more, um... well, it'd make that one room totally impossible, anyway. The one with the exceedingly slow elevators.

By time limit I meant something reasonable but still challenging for each new save.

How about encasing the whole screen in darkness apart from a small circle of light around the Kid (like a spotlight) so you had no idea where you were going?

Do you mean Moogy's idea or a way to make the game harder?

It'll be an added difficulty. It's a bit off in the distance but It'll be in eventually.

I guess this is where I should pitch my idea for additional hardness. It occurs to me that several areas are in a sense self-contained challenges, inasmuch as they are based on the same theme or dynamic of obstacles. Examples of this are either of the block sequence rooms, the Labyrinth, or in particular, the Tetris room.

My idea is to make 'remixes' of these rooms, expanding on and filling out the different abusive potential they each have. To continue with the Tetris room, the sequence of blocks and positions could be much harder, longer and more complex. The Labyrinth could be longer, but it could also have such obnoxious NES game elements as key-finding, invisible and fake walls, and my personal favorite, the inexplicable item retrieval and usage quest-

"Ok, so I found a clove of Garlic, now I have to do what? Oh yeah, stand in this corner under the boulder dispenser and hold down while entering the Konami code. Wait, what does this do, again?"

A la Simon's Quest.

A sequence of these, or a hub from which they could be completed in any order would be great fun/pain.

Silly Simon's Quest and it's whirlwind of confusion.
