At the Maze of MADNESS [First Release 1.0]
« on: September 28, 2011, 06:50:28 pm »

Download Version 1.0 (First Release)

UNZIP THE FILES, PLEASE.

At the Maze of Madness
Genre: Platformer/Adventure/Metroid-Vania
File Size: 3.04 mb
File Type: EXE
Requirements: A computer that isn't absolutely awful. Something that can open zips (Winrar or 7zip).
Installer: No

Preamble: This is a project I've been working on for a long while now, and wanted to get out there for people to enjoy. As a connoisseur of difficult platformers, as I'm sure all of you are, I wanted to make the game somewhat challenging. No, it's not I Wanna be the Guy hard, just NES hard, if you get my drift.

Brief Description: You are Darius, a mysterious adventurer venturing into some vague ruins for some vague reason. Okay, the plot was an after thought, but who cares about that anyway? Platforming. Exploration. Power-Ups. Metroid-Vania. Old school difficulty. If you are a fan of old-school platforming, give it a shot. Come on, that's all you need to know!

Screenshots:

Bug Reports: I am but a lone person, who has worked on and off, here and there, on this project over a somewhat long period of time. There are bound to be some bugs. If you encounter any glitches, especially any game breaking ones, PLEASE report them to me. Precise and specific descriptions are a must, and screenshots couldn't hurt either. If you aren't sure it's a bug or not, go ahead and report it anyway, to be safe, you know.

Lost and/or Perplexed?: Give me a shout out. I'll help point you in the right direction.

Criticism: Don't feel afraid to critique things that you didn't like about the game. I have thick enough skin, and, if anything, it will help me on future projects. Please be constructive though. "Man, I hate the graphics!" Isn't all that constructive. What don't you like about them? What could I do differently?

UNZIP THE FILES, PLEASE.

This games title reminded me of maze of galious as did the knight guy in the screen shots. Looks kinda cool I guess, nothing to outstanding but eh looks like it could be fun. Might want to fix the download link though.

Edit: Ok I'm pretty sure you got alot of inspiration from maze of galious.

Um platforming is a little buggy and wall jumping through screen transitions is really annoying.

I'm not too sure about the platforming being glitchy, but maybe I'm just used to it. If you prefer it, I could remove the transition all together. Thoughts?

And yeah. Maze of Galious. Spot on.

Edit: Sorry about the download link, should work properly now.

So I reached the part where you get wall jumping.

I like the game. But:

-The game's a bit slow. Can you make it be faster?
-Wall jumping is hard to use. I had to repeat it many times before finally manage to perform it right.
-Those "chests" (yellow boxes around the game)... Can be opened or something?

Jumping against walls just stops all vertical momentum. I see why its done considering the wall jumping but maybe you could disable that from happening until you get the wall jump?

Also I like screen transitions but maybe you shouldn't have to wall jump up screen transitions.Just put a couple little openings on the side so the player can take stop for a second to see what he is doing then start up again.

-The reason you start out slow is because there are powerups to make yourself faster. I'd suggest heading to the Sludge Pit. There's one there, very early to reach. :)
-As a veteran of Jumper, I find them pretty easy. The wall jumping is pretty similar to that. You don't have to be RIGHT on the wall to jump either, just close.
-You can open the chests after obtaining YE MACE.

Jumping against walls just stops all vertical momentum. I see why its done considering the wall jumping but maybe you could disable that from happening until you get the wall jump?

I'll look into a solution for both of these.

Thanks for the input, guys.

I don't get any lag on my laptop. Maybe you need to close some background processes?

Which? Or do you just want me to get GameBooster?

I guess you could get gamebooster. You could also just go into your task manager and close some extraneous processes eating up your memory.

I suppose I could try to kill some background stuff to make the game a little less memory intensive (the game is far from optimized as far as that goes), but it shouldn't be that bad regardless.

I find that Starz0r's computer isn't up to date on most things. No need to do anything with the game as far as optimization is concerned.

Its a XP Computer so it isn't that bad :/. Though this one could need major upgrades as I'm conserened.
