Just a what if, not that its ever going to happen...

If IWBTG were to be remastered, with better graphics, new controls, new gun options (like what YoSniper did), keeping the old levels and bosses, but at the same time making new ones, secret ending if game beat in impossible mode, when mother brain beat in hard or higher difficulty, you get the real (super metroid) dino mother brain, smoother collision detection, more effects/cutscenes, secret bosses, new abilities, multiplayer gameplay mode, new traps added, and... wait for it...

Who said you weren't, what I meant was that I doubt this will happen, like you said, there will be copyright infringing galore. Just kind of thought about what if it did happen

I think it could appeaL to a wide audience, as team meats games have proved there's definitely a market for funny frustrating and maschistic games!

I was thinking about this the other day.
Not a new game; just a port of IWBTG to C++.
It'd basically end up being a re-write of IWBTG with all sprites etc needing to me moved across.
To quickly cover some of the advantages of a C++ remake:
Much faster, no lag.
No MMF2 related frequent crashes.
Any operating system.
Easy porting to other platforms such as phones or PSP.
Easy modding, could follow a level format to let people make new levels or add features to the engine easily.

That said, it'd be fairly time consuming to recreate every level. I don't think I'd have the time or do that on my own.
Just out of interest, what is people's reaction to this idea, and would they be willing to give some time to it?
I'd be interested to see if people would give time to it (coding skill would not be important, most of the time would go on bug testing and ripping sprites as well as copying over MMF2 code).
If I get, a few regulars or people who would be happy to put in some hours then I'd be willing to take on the coding, say this summer. I'm pretty busy at the moment with work and collage. So I'm not going to push this right now. I would just like to see if anyone would care enough to put in time to make this happen?

Seems like a waste of time. Everything you are talking about adding takes away from the little retro call back charm the game had which is pretty much all the game had going for it.

Coding shouldn't be too much of a problem since I already have a C++ engine.

That said, coding for an IWBTG port should be relatively trivial.
Does anyone who understands MMF2 know if the levels can be exported somehow?
Otherwise I could use the huge world map we have and just use a python script to search for the walls etc.

Well the engine is basically just the source code for Pickory. I never bothered to seperate out parts to specifically make an engine.

Ok. Would you be willing to release some of the code for the kid, moving platform etc. to be open source for an IWBTG C++ port if people wanted one?
Partly I'm also interest in how you made you engine.
I tried to have each object inherit from an "object" template where they would replace the "object" virtual functions. In this way all the objects in the game could be kept in one vector or tree and the virtual functions would be called for them. So I could have the main loop go and call the draw function for each object in turn. However I'm not sure this was the best way. Is this what you did or did you use a different method?

Well that's basically what I did, except that I called the class Entity. Anyway, I'm not sure what the best way to release the source code is.

I personally think that it is a waste of time. I mean, the game has some flaws, but generally works fine most of the time. Spending so much time to recreate a game that already exists isn't worth it. Lets face it, IWBTG is a game for niche audience, and that is mainly because of its difficulty, being Windows-only doesnt really matter here.
