My best gun v0.1

Hi guys.
This is my newest fangame, is something experimental but I try to make it fun


This game contains:

-No traps
-Variety of enemies
-Random-weapons (If you destroy the chest will get one random weapon)
-One boss

What you made is pretty fun and the concept is interesting. I don't like how it saves you with the weapon you choose, because if you pick up a bad one you are stuck with it until the next chest. The gutsman boss felt pretty cheap with close-range weapons (such as the lightning) and I had to deal with his charge attack since there was no way for me to switch. Maybe you could try for a mega-man like game where you complete stages to unlock different weapons.

I somehow got stuck under the floor at the first savepoint in the underground area, after I reloaded several times. It seems impossible to get out of and I'm gonna have to restart.

EDIT: Got back to where I was and finished up this version. Aside from that little hiccup, I really enjoy this so far. It's fun, the difficulty so far is fair, and the music's fantastic. I think this is probably your best game yet! Can't wait for the next version.

So I beat it, here are some thoughts/observations:

-I like the general concept but the problem with RNG games like this is that, as I did, people will just spam R to get the weapon they want. I feel like in this game the weapons are really unbalanced; I honestly have no idea why anyone would use a weapon other than the powerful but ranged elec man weapon or the blaster shot which also shoots diagonally. For the first half of the game elec man weapon is essentially unstoppable, until you reach the part with the cliffs where it would be incredibly difficult to make the jump with the mettool on the platform with it so you have to swap it out; only the nearest chest at this point is back down with the troll, so you have to fight him every time you reload to maybe get a weapon that will work before you can even attempt the next section. I know this isn't the intended method, but when you make some sections unnecessarily hard with some weapons, it's what the player is forced to do. The only other weapon I bothered using was the regular blaster shot with the diagonal upwards shot attached: due to the way some enemies spawn in from the top, like the annoying birds, getting a shot in first with an angle weapon was the only thing that stopped them from being overly frustrating, the ability to shoot things on higher ground made this weapon stand out amongst all the other lower damage weapons like the bouncing bomb or the cutter which were in my mind novel but useless. I agree with piece that the weapons should be distributed differently, and I think that each subsequent stage should add more weapons to the pool/remove old ineffective weapons from the pool
 
-A few glitches: Due to the way enemies spawn, you can edge them into the screen and kill them before they can attack. E.g. the pig at the start of stage 2, this results in strange projectile behaviour (the bomb bouncing in ways it shouldn't). Another example would be the spiky things which run along the ground, it's incredibly easy to get them to spawn in the same position thus reducing their threat immensely. The two platforms at the beginning of stage two can really easily displace if you break the rock wrong making the segment harder as you only have one to stand on.

-I don't really like the window size, but I guess classic games with smaller resolutions is the aesthetic you're going for; though at least fix the game over screen displacement if this is the case.

-The sprites were nice and I enjoyed the music when there was music, there was none in the first area or the boss for me. The game was interesting and I like the concept, I just think in its current state there are improvements that need to be made in order for it to translate better in to gameplay as I've mentioned above.

Looking forward to whatever comes next :~)

Nothing against that, but I'd rather have those than a spike game. (or at least a bad spike game) I guess that makes sense in general considering it's an experimental game.

A couple notes:

-the bomb gun goes through walls (imo that's good, don't remove pls)
-the first boss's projectiles don't spawn if her mostly offscreen (again, not necessarily negative)
-the balls of the purple enemy can bounce back the way they came from, which makes dodging them kind of confusing

I think Kid should be awarded 1 permanent weapon upgrade each time he beats a boss. He could then change between the chosen perma-weapon(s, depending on how many bosses he's beaten) and a temporary weapon.
Although, that could become too OP later in the game. Maybe make certain enemies weak to certain weapons? Or, would that be too much like Mega Man?

I believe these are linked to what I was discussing about the way enemies spawn affecting their attack patterns. The pig's bombs bounce backwards if he's only just present on the edge of the screen but not fully there.

It'd be nice if you implemented the option to change your the controls. Usually having Y being the standard shoot button in fangames doesn't bother me that much because they usually never have anything to shoot at besides bosses, but in games that utilize the gun this much I vastly prefer shooting with the right hand. I do realize that it's possible to change the keybinds via the controls.txt, but not every player is going to realize that and looking for the ID of every single key on the keyboard just to change it to the correct number in the txt file is rather annoying.

Other than that I agree with pretty much everything Derf (pornographer) said. I can't wait to see where you take this game, it's looking really promising so far!

A gun like Rocket Knight where you shoot yourself at the enemies and gain a period of invincibility upon hitting them, however to balance it you're left dazed for a split second upon landing.

In the screen where you can start/load/delete a game, there's a button that says CONTROLS. For some reason it's offscreen, but you should be able to access it by pressing down from the middle DELETE button, and pressing Shift. (the default jump/action button)
I knew that because I've seen many games with the layout, but I quickly noticed something was off.

Also, pornographer is Derf? I should've known.

Oh. Yeah the resolution there should definitely be fixed then but still, thanks for the heads-up.

I is difficult to make a larger window size as my netbook does not support  =(
