Hard-ass platform games on Mac?
« on: October 09, 2014, 07:17:09 pm »

Hello friends,   I seek hard-ass 2D platformers along the lines of:

Super Meat Boy
VVVVVV
Jumper
Electronic Super Joy

on Mac OSX.  I am especially interested in finding quality freeware or fan-games that I might have missed in other discussions.

I seek Mac native games or quality ports.  I am playing Jumper via Wine and it is sadly slowed down. No good :(  (Maybe you can point to a copy that runs better?)

My favorite games are super-tough but fair---I'm less a fan of hidden traps and joke deaths a la IWBTG.  But I will accept those too :)     Many thanks!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure you can get Kaizo Mario, Mario Must Die, and Cool or Cruel on Mac.

I believe you can run just about any Windows-compatible programs on a Mac using Wine.

The OP is saying that they want "Mac native games or quality ports."  Wine slows games to a point where it becomes problematic.

I probably should've read that first post completely...

That's right, Wine can have significant slowdown; and even a small slowdown is unacceptable when you're playing for bragging rights  :P

Also, plenty of games I just can't get to work at all on Wine, e.g. Jumper 2.

Using Macintosh to play isn't a smart thing to do.
You can always browse Steam games with some filters to show you "Indie, Platform Games, On Mac". And then pirate them (or buy them, if you have the money). Because I seriously doubt anyone has made such a kind of game for free.
I'm lazy to provide you an example. So, http://store.steampowered.com/tag/en/Indie

Yep, I'd just get Steam. OSX has a tendency to not attract any hardcore platformer game developers

Thanks all---I have Steam, but am feeling that I've tapped out their Mac platformer options though.

OK, can you give me your top reasons why I should buy a PC? (I.e., awesome hardcore platformers I will be able to play.)

For reference, my top games right now would probably be Super Meat Boy and 1001 Spikes.  These play on Mac and PC and are super fun.  1001 Spikes is unfair with traps a la IWBTG, but less grievously so.

The Jumper series by Matt Thorson is the first thing I'd be itching to play on PC.  Any more like this I should know?

Cave Story, a legendary hard platformer, on hard mode you get insta deaths so that makes it hard.
It's also for Mac on steam :)
