Got another one for you.

#  The free game I Wanna Be The Guy is not Nintendo Hard, it's Nintendo Sadistic. Everything really is Trying To Kill You. Even apples''. And at one point? The moon gets dropped on you. Several times. Find it in all its horrible, hair-tearing glory here.

    * Apples don't fall up. D:

From TVtropes.org.

Hey, that's how I found the game in the first place! 8D

Me too!
For a while, I didn't even realize that it wasn't an old commercial game like all the others on the Nintendo Hard page

I found, in a MUGEN character a reference to I wanna be the Guy :O

There is a japanese MUGEN creator named Ahuron who's known for his rather... strange extra forms in characters, and his Mukuro is no exception.  He added a mode where Mukuro can summon various things like Earthworm Jim, The guy with the heavy machine gun from Metal Slug, a whole shitload of NES things, and most importantly (for you guys at least), The kid!

When summoned by said character, he jumps around and takes potshots at whoever he's facing, in this case, Ryu!

However, I accidentally threw Ryu into the Kid, and he exploded  :'(

and I'm not sure if this next one is exactly a IWBTG reference, but..

That's a pretty kickass stage there.

There's actually a full series of videos on nicovideo of some japanese guy trying to play through the game, that way viewers can enjoy it from a safe distance =P First video is here http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm5662543 and each video links to the next; you need an account to watch things on nicovideo though. At some point he'll finish it... maybe.

The moderator blog of german-bash.org (a quote database similar to bash.org, but in German) references this game: http://german-blog.org/gbo-stinkt/flamewar-fernkurs-lektion-1/

As you probably don't understand this, here's a summary of this blog post: The moderator comments a quote he received that, because they don't find one conversation partner's quotes funny, insults all the GBO moderators (and then says something along the lines of "I hope these people with small dicks read this conversation"). The moderator re-insults these users in several ways, one of them being "If you have too much time on your hands so that you send such quotes in, why don't you go play your way all through 'I wanna be the guy' - after all you have no life that could hinder you from doing this anyway".

And well - that's how I first heard of this game (which I'm now going to download for the first time).
