La-Mulana and why Kayin sucks at making a hard game
« on: February 26, 2009, 11:14:19 pm »

I've been playing La-mulana, and unlike IWBTG, it's driving me into total ramming my face into the CRT monitor insanity. Google La-mulana, play it, and then you will know actual frustration.
Kayin, stop trying to make a difficult game, LEAVE IT TO THE JAPANESE.

Played and beat it. I liked IWBTG better to be honest.

Just because it's japanese makes it harder? Or did you mean something else? Please elaborate.

Yeah, that statement was hella dumb, dude. I've said many times La-Mulana is definitely harder than IWBTG, but that doesn't mean it replaces anything I Wanna Be The Guy does -- you know, I actually didn't try and make IWBTG the hardest game possible right? The game was designed to be hard but beatable and have nostalgic retro humor. Considering all my success (and lets not mention japanese Lets Plays of it on Nico Nico Douga) I think the game performed Excellently®.

Gladly.
With some objects (god damn you wall climbing) you have to react FAST and your margin of error is about 5 milliseconds.
IWBTG didn't rage me up some facial wounds. La-Mulana did MANY TIMES.
La-Mulana's bosses are much harder.
I have turned to cheat engine in desparation SEVERAL more times

It also doesn't help that most of the information in the la-mulana wiki seriously lacks details.

That, and about %90 of extremely difficult games come from japan.

Go ahead and prove me wrong here.

The point is that when Kayin dies, he will not go to the special spot in hell no doubt reserved for the creators of La-Mulana.

OK, I'm killing this game and all of it's saves
I will move the other games contained on the SDcard onto my desktop, then I will format it. then I will completely fill it with meaningless data and format it again. I will repeat this 10 times, then I will incinerate the SD card. BRB.

It's over. I beat La-Mulana...
I'M FREE!
I CAN DO WHAT I WANT!
I'M FREE FROM THAT GOD DAMN ABOMINATION!
But now I now have to go repair the damages this has done to my life. Goodbye!

La-Mulana and IWBTG are difficult for two completely different reasons;  IWBTG bluntly tells you what you have to go through where La-Mulana leaves itself in obscurity.  IWBTG is harder in (general) terms of platforming, where La-Mulana has difficult puzzle/problem-solving elements.

Of course La-Mulana's gonna be harder; you have so much more to do without knowing what you're supposed to do.

Well put Rag.

I personally found IWBTG's platforming much harder then La Mulana's puzzles. I've always been good with those kind of puzzles. :D

LaMulana is good, but I can't get it working on my laptop.

IWBTG is all about reflexes and what not to do with them. I can get it working on my laptop.

You want hard? Oregon Trail 2. Teacher turned Trail Guide, no skills, six people, small wagon, from Nauvoo to Oregon using the river, starting during February 1840.

My counterpoints:
- I can't even tell which game you're talking about, or what game this point is in favor of.
- I have sincere doubts that you injured yourself while playing this game.
- Subjective. Do you have any points you'd like to make besides "harder"?
- Being driven to the point of desperate cheating more often? Okay, one point for La Mulana.
- Lacking information in a wiki is not the fault of the game, nor is it a point in the game's design that makes it harder. That's all on the community that makes it, not the game designer.
- "Comes from Japan" is not a valid point when you're talking about freeware that doesn't meet regional quality control standards. Hard-as-nails games were sometimes toned down for North American release when someone figured it would sell better if it was easier. Because IWBTG is freeware and doesn't get assessed by anyone, your point is moot.

All my arguing aside, your title is still wrong. Kayin made IWBTG, and IWBTG is a hard game. It's a good hard game, well-known and reviled for being hard. Playthroughs of it with reviewers screaming in agony enjoy some measure of internet fame (lol, internet fame).
