Step 1.  DO NOT HESITATE.

Step 2.  Double jump over the first 3 spikes.

Step 3. Do small double jumps over the next two spikes.

Step 4. When you get to the block that triggers the one spike to extend into the safe spot, jump BEFORE reaching it, start moving right, and jump again just before you touch it and into the safe spot.

Step 5. ? ? ? ?

Step 6. PROFIT.

Hm. I found that that block triggered even if I was at nowhere near it, so...
...as the ceiling reached the floor, I stood in the gap between two spikes.

You can DO that???!!!  That would've saved me a helluva lot of effort.

The first time I beat the room I did it by standing in the gap between two spikes, but it was completely on accident - I fully expected to be killed, and was pleasantly surprised when I wasn't.

Each subsequent time I tried to get through that room, though, I couldn't hide in the gap no matter how hard I tried, and had to beat it the way Xylon Lionheart described it. It requires too high a level of precision, and the first time was absolute blind luck.

Whenever I mess up that jump (about 75% of the time) I usually try to go for the gap squeeze thing. I use those square-within-a-square blocks as a guideline. It does require precise positioning but if you miss the jump it's worth a shot.

EDIT: heh while I was taking that screen I tried double jumping over the trap instead of a single one, silly me! That 75% is effectively reduced to 74%!

My friend did the same thing to get past the spikes during the Ghouls 'n Ghosts portion of the game.
