Hey everyone!

I'm terribly sorry I've disappeared for so long... I've been going through some stuff, and in the process I've kinda lost motivation to continue making this game.  It was taking up so much of my time and energy (both psychologically and mentally).  I haven't really lost anything, so I can continue if the motivation returns, but that hasn't happened yet.

I appreciate all of your support, and I am glad that many of you like this game, but it's just taking a while to get back on track.  When I began the project, my ambition was to make something difficult yet simple in design, like IWBTG.  However, after many changes, updates, and after lots of cool ideas were implemented into the game, it turns out I bit off more than I can chew.

I can't promise that the game will ever be finished, but there is hope at least... I just... well, it's hard to explain.  This kind of thing happens to me a lot.  I'll really get into something, perhaps a hobby or ambition, and then all of the sudden I lose interest almost completely.  I don't know why.

One thing I have been considering is taking all I have learned during this project and try something a little less glorious.  Perhaps a simple little puzzle game... something that I can more easily finish and say "hey, I made this game, and yes this is the complete version".  Maybe that will be a rewarding experience that will jumpstart me to finish the Fangame game.

Again, thanks for all of your support.

Oh, and one last thing.  I have been asked by a few people if they can use resources from Fangame, such as graphics.  I didn't actually make most of them, but rather collected them from elsewhere and just adjusted or edited them.  That being said, feel free to use the graphics and stuff as you please.  I only ask that you do not use Jonny, the main character, for anything you do.  That sprite is a bit dear to me and I would like him to remain unique if I can.

Where did you get the animated lightning at the beginning of the ice world? Do you still have a copy I could use?

Ah, that one I drew myself.  I don't really have a "copy" of it because I drew each frame directly into MMF's sprite editor.

How did you handle the music in your game?

I've currently only got music for 7 rooms, but I'm already up to 14.4mb of music alone, more then the entire size of your fangame. What can I do? Should I reduce the quality of my music? What is a good way to do this?

I'll help you here.

What I do, is reduce the file size on windows movie maker (I Know, I Know) to less than a MB. If they are 8bit/16bit files, you should have no problem. Most MP3 quality files come out unschathed too.

What I am about to suggest is something that was suggested to me long ago and I didn't want to do it, but it turns out to be much better.

Convert your music to OGG format.  This will allow you to have a much smaller file size while retaining good quality.  You can use the free version of Switch audio converter to do this.

What you would then do is play your OGG music as a sample in MMF2, just as you would sound effects.  The obvious difference is that you would want it playing as background music, and you would want it separate from other samples.  You do this by specifying a channel to play the music on.  When you are setting up the OGG to play in your MMF2 project, you will see that there is an option for "Play sample on specific channel" or something like that.  The channels range from 1-32.  What I do is play it on Channel 1 and then lock that channel so that no other sample can use it unless I specifically tell it to.  You can use this as your "music" channel.

I was using MP3 files for my music, and using the DirectShow object to play them.  However, when I finally gave in and took the advice to switch to OGG, it reduced the file size of my game tremendously while retaining quality sound.  Yes, it was a bit of work to go back and redo each portion of the game that played music, but it was worth it in the end.

On a side note, not that many would care, but it seems that MP3 encoding is actually a copyrighted process, and usage of an MP3 in a project like this can 'possibly, technically' be considered some kind of copyright infringement or something.  It's really a stretch, but I figured I could at least share that info with you.

Well, I hope I was helpful.  Also, if you are using MMF2 for your project, I would highly recommend visiting the Clickteam forums and downloading their "Gwerdy chat" client.  There are some helpful, experienced folks that hang out in that chat that can perhaps offer you assistance even more than I can.  I have had much help from them.  If you go, tell them vertigoelectric sent you, and that I said hello.  :)

Actually, most of my music is in ogg format already. I guess the quality is just set too high.

Edit:
Ok I resaved everything in Audacity with a quality of 0 and switched to mono, and I've now got the music down to a total of 4.64mb. Hopefully, the quality won't make a noticeable difference.

P.S.
Ok I have a new question. (and I even managed to avoid the urge to doublepost)
What is your philosophy on beta releases? Should I make a new release after every new room, or wait till I complete a whole area? What about changes to the engine? With an engine change, there are usually no noticeable changes to the game, so noone will care enough to test it, but there is a high risk of new bugs that testers need to look for.

What I'd suggest is for most engine changes do a release after the changes to catch bugs early, but for levels wait a bit; a few rooms at a time is much better than one at a time. Just make sure your testers are thorough.

Tell them what they should specifically look for for large changes and to just have them play around with it to see if they find anything. Some general things to look out for are collision detection errors in the corners (Both of the character and walls) and spikes being a pixel or so off center on blocks (Which allows you to stand on said block without death). Also, make sure you do some testing yourself if you don't feel they get a lot of bugs.

So far, I've only gotten 3 downloads, and not a single comment or piece of feedback at all. Any ideas?

I do test everything myself, but that can only get you so far. Other people always do stuff that you never thought of trying.

Hey Storyyeller.  I'll try your game out if you like.

Anyway, I thought I'd go ahead and apologize to everybody for my long absence.  I am now back and am continuing production of Fangame: The Game.

I'm not sure if I will keep updating everybody on THIS forum, so if you're interested in staying up to date with the goings-on of this game then please come to the official Fangame: The Game forum at http://fangame.vertigofx.com

Beta testing will be closed for the most part, but I will release beta versions publicly from time to time.  It would be great to turn our quiet forum into a growing little community of people interested in the game.

If you want to be a beta tester, just log onto our forums and send me a PRIVATE message.  I'll probably respond with a few questions and whatnot.
