I take Spanish. Frown.

Anyway, we have a cultural project in that class, and we need to do an immersion bit on a Spanish-speaking country (choices being: The U.S., Mexico, Argentina, Spain and Ecuador, I think). Since my topic is going to be music and the musical history of the country, I want to learn a musical piece that originated from one of those countries that I can play on the violin.

Unfortunately, the schools have failed in imparting cultural diversity upon me, and I don't know of anything that would fit the bill (without being excessively slow or dry). The deadline's making an unpleasant whooshing sound, so I ask: any ideas?

When they show Mexican bands on the TV and in movies, isn't there always a violinist? Just look up Mexican dancing music and look if there's a violin in them.

A good number of people speak Spanish primarily in the United States, and those are the countries we are restricted to.

If Cuba was available, you could go with Buena Vista Social Club, it rocks.
