There doesn't happen to be a way to configure the joypad buttons?

Going by PS1 controls, fire on my joypad is X and jump is square. It's kind of awkward in areas where I need to fire a lot very quickly, as I have to use the much slowed bottom part of my thumb. I've been able to live with this, but I'm absolutely confounded by Mother Brain and partially blame my slow fire rate. Any way to fix this I'm just overlooking like the dumbass I am?

You could try putting your index finger on [] and your middle finger on X and playing that way for that fight...that's how I did it
