Maybe we need to have a way to gauge difficulty? I'd second Smash Bros being kind of easy, but that's just my opinion. For that matter, how do you gauge a J-RPG or a tactical strategy game versus a brawler or platformer? Maybe we should split them into lists by type?

I don't think it's that hard, going back and playing it again, but when I was young, this game terrified me. My friends and I played it again and again, and when we mastered it, it made me realize I'd never find a 'hard' game again, and I never have. That's not a complaint though, it's a state of mind. =P

The Adventures of Bayou Billy/http://romhustler.net/rom/nes/25

I'll add it later when i get home gonna test it first

Thanks for adding CS. Just now I noticed......Super Smash Bros? How's that have any resemblance to IWBTG?? It's not THAT hard....

have you beaten on one player on the hardest difficulty with one life for every character... i didnt think so

i kinda got it split between download and the one needing username but i could try it your way.... two different topics maybe????

Take your time, it's pretty fun! I'd forgotten, it's not really hard... the hit detection seems a lot better than I remembered, it's just about timing your punches right in the first level, after that every other level isn't so bad. Ah, well! It seemed harder when I was a kid. Anyway, don't worry about splitting it into two topics, that'd just be difficult. This is fine for now, anyway. =)

Hi, I'm hitstun. I couldn't let this go without posting. Here are a few games I can think of off hand that are harder than IWBTG, but still totally beatable in theory:

Mushihime-sama Futari: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ztCxpBmXuA
Enigmatic Mario: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-6AY1I2RJwI
Jumper Redux: http://gmc.yoyogames.com/?showtopic=93317

I'm sure there are harder games than these even. That's just all I could think of on short notice.

Edit: Good to see someone mentioned Jinsei Owata. Nice to see another Kohaku fan, too, hehe

7inchflame: I was referring to Bayou Billy. =)

Hitstun, hiya! Welcome, that first shooter looks absolutely insane, especially for someone with bad ability to keep track of things like myself... Jumper Redux is very fun! Enigmatic Mario just seems over-the top though; it's not about difficulty or skill, it's about one or two pixels, which isn't as much fun for anyone. And Jinsei Owata is indeed awesome, as is Kohaku, hehehe!

Since we're blurring the lines a bit, maybe add Goonies II and Metal Gear (or was it MG2)?  These weren't so much difficult to beat as they were difficult to understand at first.  I wasted a few rental periods just trying to figure out what was going on in Goonies II.  Metal Gear was just unconventional.  Games shouldn't need manuals.

I don't see TMNT in the thread, either.  What a pain of a game.

Edit: Damn!  Forgot Clash at Demonhead and Back to the Future II/II

Oh, come on:

Megaman (the first)
Megaman (the one with Quickman)
Castlevania
Ghosts 'n Goblins
Zelda (the first and second, but mostly the second)
Super Mario Bros. (the first, although it's not remotely hard anymore to the Nintendo generation)

I think you should trade Super Metroid for NES Metroid.  I don't think Super Metroid even qualifies as Hard, unless it's a Super Metroid, nothing-but-wall-jumps hack.
the Megaman With Quickman Was Megaman 2

I thought so.  It's the one NES Megaman I never owned, but the one I enjoyed the most.

I remember that it took me forever to beat the Quickman stage, but was not a difficult game overall.  The first Megaman was wildly different in difficulty from all the rest, probably because the powerups weren't always helpful and the controls were stiff.
